As I approach a new project, I am motivated by what touches and /or inspires me. This is  true for both landscapes and portraiture. Inspiration  from the subject is brought to life via the soul of the artist. I usually work from life , but can also work from my preliminary sketches or photos. I do not attempt to copy nature or the model. I use extensive art techniques to convey what the subject and setting suggest and to express what my observation and insights reveal. I believe that each color has it own soul and brushstrokes can animated life. I use expressive colors to express feelings. Together they combine to bring the painting to life. I enjoy myself throughout the creative process whether in the field or in  the studio, I always devote time to understand both the subject and the setting. I ask myself what drives me to paint the scene? I then do several quick thumb sketches from different points of view . Only when I am satisfied with the composition, color and value , am I ready to move forward. The work is not completed until it meets my standard. Getting there is not always easy, but the result are worth the efforts. I am committed to using heart , mind and varied techniques to create artwork that can stand on its own. It often takes great persistence to "get it right"!
